CANBERRA: The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) and the Canberra Association of Pontos 'Trapezounta' announced that an Armenian and Greek Genocide Commemoration event will be hosted on Tuesday, 27 May 2025 at the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Legislative Assembly, from
6:30pm - 8:30pm.
The commemorative event will feature a Keynote Address from Australian National University historian, novelist and documentary producer, Professor Bruce Scates, who will join the local Armenian and Greek communities in commemorating the 110th Anniversary of the Genocides.
Mr Scates is a prominent World War 1 historian and lecturer who has published a number of award-winning books and has been recognised at both a state and national level for teaching excellence. As part of his most recent annual ANZAC Day broadcasts, Mr Scates placed the spotlight on Australia’s involvement in saving the lives of countless Armenian genocide survivors.
This will mark the second year that the two communities will jointly host a commemoration in the nation’s capital, in the presence of dignitaries including elected officials, ambassadors, academics and prominent community and religious leaders.

Armenian National Committee of Australia Administrative Assistant, Mr Sebastian Majarian, said: “It’s encouraging to see our community in Canberra get together with their Greek counterparts to commemorate our shared history of genocide and persecution. Building on the success of last year's commemoration, I hope we can increase awareness on the genocide throughout the ACT Legislative Assembly and Canberra as a whole.”
