CANBERRA: As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese once again refused to use the word genocide to mark the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide — the Australian Greens, the largest crossbench force in the Federal Parliament, reaffirmed their party policy supporting official Australian recognition of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides.
In a video statement delivered by the Greens Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Senator David Shoebridge, and Senator for Victoria, Senator Steph Hodgins-May, the pair stated that, “the Greens recognise the truth of the Armenian Genocide. We recognize the truth of the history and we pay tribute to the victims and survivors and for those amongst the Armenian community across the world who continue to campaign for that fundamental truth.”

The statement reiterated the Australian Greens’ long-standing commitment to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and serves as a powerful example of what the Armenian-Australian community expects from it’s elected leaders.
The remarks made by Shoebridge and Hodgins-May came alongside a swath of video messages by parliamentarians from across Australia and the political spectrum. On April 24, 2026, over 20 Parliamentarians at both the state and federal levels shared messages of support for the 111th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, while also reiterating their calls for federal recognition of the Genocides.
Among the 20 messages delivered by parliamentarians were statements by state Greens members, The Hon. Sophie McNeill MLC, Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council, and Ms Anasina Gray-Barberio MLC, Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, who delivered powerful messages in support of Genocide recognition.
The statements highlight the ongoing divide between parties constrained by foreign gag orders and those willing to take a consistent, principled position on historical truth and justice, with the Australian Greens continuing to unequivocally support recognition of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides.

Armenian National Committee of Australia’s (ANC-AU) Political Affairs Director, Sebastian Majarian, welcomed the statement and said, “The Australian Greens have once again demonstrated the moral clarity and leadership that this issue demands.”
He continued, “at a time when recognition of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides continues to gain support across the Australian Parliament, it is increasingly clear that the refusal of successive federal governments to recognise these crimes against humanity is out of step with both the historical record and the views of many of their own colleagues.”
