ANNOUNCEMENT: Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) counts every person and household in Australia. This year's Census of Population and Housing will be taking place on Tuesday, 11th August 2026.
The Census is the most comprehensive snapshot of the country and tells the diverse story of the nation's economic, social and cultural make-up, informing government, community and business. It helps the government gain an accurate understanding of the demographic landscape to plan essential programs and services.
To ensure the Census accurately reflects the size of the Armenian-Australian community, the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) is encouraging all Armenian-Australians to record "Armenian" as their ancestry when completing the Census.
This is done through Question 23 – Ancestry, where respondents can nominate up to four ancestries that best reflect their cultural or ethnic background.
Although the Census provides a list of common ancestry options, "Armenian" will not appear as a pre-listed checkbox. Instead, respondents should:
Write or type "Armenian" in the space provided.
Every response matters.
Accurate Census data strengthens the ANC-AU's ability to advocate for the needs and interests of the Armenian-Australian community. Reliable population statistics support advocacy for community funding, culturally appropriate services, and informed public policy, while ensuring governments have a clear understanding of Australia's Armenian population.
